Meet the Team

Dr Magdalyne Dura is currently the Director, Centre for Gender Studies, Benue State University, Makurdi and the Chairman, Benue state University Staff School Board. In addition to being a Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Law, she is also the Deputy Dean of the Facult.,

She is  a committed Activists of especially women’s rights and served on several federal and state committees in the actualization of CEDAW in Nigeria. This has been the focus of her efforts in women rights, the belief that the domestication of CEDAW in Nigeria will be a catalyst for other gains.She is currently working on the Domestic Violence Bill in several Nigeria States

Rommy Mom, President, Lawyers Alert, is a Lawyer and international development expert with 10 years of experience managing programs in the fields of good governance, civil society strengthening and socio-economic rights. He has worked closely with civil society organizations throughout Nigeria to build capacity, increase civic participation, develop advocacy capabilities, and provide civic and political education.  His experience includes needs assessments, program design and implementation, training, curriculum design, managing sub-grants to partner organizations, preparing and implementing monitoring and evaluation programs, ensuring compliance with donor requirements, reporting, financial management and staff management.

He has extensive experience managing networks and coalitions of civil society groups throughout Nigeria, providing capacity building, strategic direction and program management.

Prior to being President of Lawyers Alert, Mr Mom served as the Nigerian Country Director of an international capacity-building organization that works side by side with local communities in Africa, Asia, and Latin America to promote and protect the rights of marginalized populations in areas such as the rights to participation and information, anti-discrimination, justice, food, water, health, education, and housing.

Earlier in his career, Mr. Mom also served as Chairman of BENGONET,  a network of local NGOs operating in Benue State.  In that role he was responsible for capacity building for civil society members of the network; coalition strengthening; and team building.

Mr. Mom has an L.L.B. from the University of Nigeria, BL from the Nigeria Law School, Masters in Development Studies from the Benue State University and also studied Eco-Socio Cultural Rights at the Geneva Academy of Human Rights.

Devaan Hanmation is a Professional Broadcaster and Communications Expert with over 14 years of experience in the industry. She has a BA in Mass Communication and is currently doing her Masters in Public Relations.

She started her profession with the Nigerian Television Authority in Abuja where she peaked in her career as the youngest reporter to cover the National Assembly from that media house(a portfolio she retained for 4 years) before leaving to join the BBC World Service Trust (now BBC Media Action, an International Non Governmental Organization). At the BBC WST, she served as a TV Trainer and Behaviour Change Communications Specialist for over two years, coaching and mentoring Producers in various TV stations across seven states in Nigeria on a HIV intervention project. Her efforts at the BBC were crowned with an award when she was named “Staff With Outstanding Performance” in her unit in her first 15 months. Subsequently, she joined the PMI Africa Indoor Residual Spraying Project coordinated by Abt Associates (another INGO) in Lafia Nasarawa state as the Behaviour Change Communication Coordinator, a position she held for one year before leaving to take up her current appointment as the Program Manager of a Local NGO.

Devaan Hanmation has highly developed skills in Public Speaking having worked as a TV Presenter for over 12 years. Her passion for Gender Equality and Human Rights Advocacy stem from experiences she has had as a reporter and as development worker. She provides communications consultancy services for Lawyers Alert.

Onoja Edwin Abel, Barrister and Advocate with 10 years’ post call experience.  He currently works as a consultant on a broad range of access to justice, safety and security, legislative advocacy,  law, and human rights issues in Nigeria has a wide range of skills and experience relevant to reform initiatives in the justice sector. He served as Program officer to Global Rights Nigeria where he managed the paralegal program for women in Northern Nigeria.

He has been involved in legislative advocacy matters at the Nigerian National Assembly and has been instrumental to the consideration of some Bills both at the upper and lower chambers. He has offered Pro bono services to more than 76 awaiting prisoners in conjunction with  Women Advocacy and Development Support Initiative WADASI, and researched women’s participation in politics in Bauchi state in the run up to the 2007 General elections in Nigeria.  He is a Consultant to the Federal Ministry of Justice on prison Decongestion

Gabin Benedict Asan studied law at the Benue State University, and has about eight years experience working in the fields of Human Rights with emphasis on monitoring of Human Rights Violation and the Documentation thereof. Gabin Asan has over the years monitored Rights violation within the electoral process in Nigeria, and implemented the highly successful mandate protection project of Lawyers Alert in Nassarawa, Benue and KojiStates.

Asan is a grassroots Human Rights mobiliser and has worked closely with Albino Foundation in Benue State to stem the tile of discrimination, he has also being involved in Human Rights Enlightenment for the informal workers union such as, the Welder Association, the Aluminum and Steel Workers, Brick Layers Association, the Association of Cassava Farmers, Timber Dealers Association, etc.

He is the Senior Program Officer, Monitoring and Documentation.

Mary Uneje Okpe has always been passionate about women’s rights and gender equality which was her initial point of contact with Lawyers Alert, when she volunteered as a Student to work on our Gender Equality Bill Advocacy Team. The Bill was then before the Benue State House of Assembly in 2009.

Since then she has engaged with Lawyers Alert in several of such programs till her graduation with Honours in her first Degree where she majored in French. She has attended several trainings on gender mainstreaming, gender relations and women empowerment

Currently undergoing Masters Degree in Gender Studies at the Benue State University, Mary is the Senior Program Officer, Women’s Rights and Gender, exhibiting same passion and drive she exhibited when she first got involved with Lawyers in as a Volunteer.

She is the Benue State Coordinator of the National Coalition on Affirmative Action, NCAA.

    Human Right makurdi are not working. I reported a case since October n nothing has been done about it.Chinwe.08028510096.
